Most foreigners are living in Austria according to Eurostat.
The figures published by European Statistical Office Eurostat are amazing. Austria has the largest increase in foreign population in the entire EU compared to 2010. By “foreigners” Eurostat means other EU citizens, as well as non-EU citizens whose “usual place of residence” is in the respective country.
In 2010, 879 102 foreigners resided in Austria. In 2018, there were already 1,385,823 people – this amounted to an increase of 58%.
Austria also leads with 15% of foreigners from the total population.
The largest foreign population in Austria are Germans. There are 192 426 of them here. They come to study, work and because of cheaper real estate. In second and third place are Serbs (121 348) and Turks (117 231), respectively. Refugees from Syria (just under 50,000) and Afghanistan (44,000) play a slightly smaller role in terms of numbers.
Moreover, in absolute figures, Germany now has the highest absolute share of foreigners among EU countries. Almost 10 million of the 83 million inhabitants of the country are not German citizens. However, growth is significantly lower than in Austria.
On the other hand, there are countries in the EU where fewer foreigners live. Although the proportion is still high in Spain (4.5 million foreigners), since 2010 it has lost more than 800,000 people.
Only 160,000 foreigners now live in Hungary, representing only 1.7% of the population. In Greece, the share of foreigners has also declined significantly since 2010.
