As of the end of 2017, over 20 million residence permits were issued to EU citizens to non-EU countries.
According to Eurostat, in 2017 the highest growth rates of this indicator were recorded in recent years.

The number of residence permits issued by Hungary to non-EU citizens more than doubled (113%), followed by Bulgaria (41%), Malta (25%) and Slovakia (21%).

The majority (21) of the EU Member States reported an increase in the number of existing residence permits.

Among the five Member States with the largest number of residents, Germany recorded the highest growth of 14%.

The increase was also recorded in Spain, the United Kingdom and France.

In this group, only in Italy, the number of residence permits granted (-3%) decreased.

Among all EU member states, five more reported reductions: Estonia, the Czech Republic, Latvia, Greece and Romania.

More than a third (38%) of all residents at the end of 2017 became such for family reasons, with a lower proportion for employment reasons, 16%, refugee status and additional protection provided 7%, and those educated in the EU accounted for 6% of the total.
