Slovenia ranks 16th among EU member states with 12.1% of immigrants.
Of the 250,000 immigrants of Slovenia, 38% have immigrated to Slovenia in the last 10 years.
Are the “new wave” immigrants different, i.e. those who immigrated to Slovenia over the past ten years, in terms of their characteristics and living conditions, from those who immigrated to Slovenia before its independence (45%), or from those who immigrated in 1991-2007 (17%)?
At the beginning of 2018, 250,000 immigrants lived in Slovenia, these are people whose first place of residence was abroad. This means that immigrants accounted for 12.1% of the total population of Slovenia, according to the Statistical Office of Slovenia.
With such a share of immigrants, Slovenia ranks 16th among EU member states. The largest share of immigrants in Luxembourg (46.5%) and the lowest in Poland (1.8%).
Slovenia is also one of four countries, along with Croatia, Sweden and the Netherlands, with the highest share of immigrants who are also citizens of these countries.
Croatia is the first among immigrants due to the predominant Croatian immigration from Bosnia and Herzegovina and the easy acquisition of Croatian citizenship.
At the same time, there are very few immigrants in Luxembourg who acquire the citizenship of this country, which is largely due to the temporary stay of these persons in connection with work in various European institutions.
