Ljubljana would be different if Jože Plečnik could realize all his ideas. Many places in the Slovenian capital would look very different if the four major projects that Plečnik developed were implemented. The results of this great Slovenian architect are well known.
But what about the projects that he proposed and which were not implemented?
“On his career, Plečnik made more than twenty projects for Ljubljana that were not completed,” said Ana Porok, curator of the new exhibition at the Plečnik House, where four of these unrealized projects can be seen from October 18 and also find out what is from the master’s great heritage remained unfulfilled and understand the architect’s dreams of how the Slovenian capital should look.
These projects are:
The new Municipality of Ljubljana on Vodnikova and Market Squares,
The butcher bridge (or the Mesarski most), which would connect the Market Square with Petkovshskova Embankment (Petkovškovim nabrežjem),
A monumental staircase near the current Municipality of Ljubljana
and the Slovenian Parliament Building in the form of the Liberty Cathedral in Tivoli Park.
“Much has already been written about the projects of the architect Jože Plečnik for Ljubljana, especially about his completed works, and less about many other plans and projects that were not implemented for one reason or another,” says architect Nejc Bernik from the French Institute for the History of Art named Steleta. Nejc Bernik created several 3D visualizations of the mentioned projects. “Some of these projects still look bold or even bold,” the architect continues.
In addition to 3D visualizations, the exhibition will present a selection of reproductions of the plans of Jože Plečnik for these four projects from the entire collection of the architect. Visitors will also be able to see even two models printed with a 3D printer.
And on January 23, 2020, to the anniversary of Plechnik, the exhibition will present a catalog in which readers can, among other things, get acquainted with the circumstances that influenced the implementation of many projects for Ljubljana by this great architect.
